Manchester United only made two signings for Ruben Amorim’s squad in the January transfer window despite the club’s poor position in the table.

Currently sitting 13th in the Premier League table, Manchester United have been having a terrible season so far and the change of management hasn’t kickstarted any kind of resurgence.

Ruben Amorim has been trying to implement a new style of football which is proving difficult after joining the club mid-season.

The January addition of Patrick Dorgu will help the head coach, who relies heavily on the wingbacks in his system.

United will also be looking ahead to the summer window to assess the best potential signings for Amorim’s squad.

Although, importantly, the Reds need to be careful with how they spend in the summer due to limited funds. Making smart, low cost transfers in certain positions could help them get first choice targets for other roles.

United eyeing five free contract signings

United are usually the team to allow players to depart the club on free transfers but rarely manage to secure signings in that way.

This summer, however, the club are reportedly eyeing several potential options who have expiring contracts in June 2025.

According to a report from Fichajes, the Reds are looking at five main options to sign on free contracts in the summer, with Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin being one of them.

Calvert-Lewin was once highly rated as a no.9 but injuries and mixed form over recent years have impacted his reputation. He has scored 89 goals in his career so far, with 71 coming with Everton.

It was also claimed that United are looking at Lille striker Jonathan David, who was linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer.

David’s teammate and United academy graduate Angel Gomes is another player running out of contract that the Reds are looking at. Tottenham Hotspur are also looking at him as a potential signing in the summer.

Bundesliga duo Jonathan Tah and Leroy Sane are also on the radar at Old Trafford, with Sane in high demand as he approaches the end of his contract. Tah was rumoured with a move to Old Trafford previously but is being chased by Barcelona currently.

A smart strategy for United

It remains to be seen whether any such moves materialise for United in the summer, but it would be smart to try to take advantage of at least one of those situations.

Similarly to promoting youth players into the first-team, it allows United to plug holes in their squad at a low cost, which creates the space to properly address the priority positions.

For example, despite the potential need for another top level midfield player at Old Trafford, there is also going to need to be better depth in the engine room due to the likely departures of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.

Promoting someone like Sekou Kone or signing Gomes on a free contract would allow the club to focus more cash on signing a top quality first-choice option.

United still need to get through the rest of the season but thinking ahead to next term is crucial for Amorim.
