Manchester United have lined up two alternative targets in case their bid to sign Wolves forward Matheus Cunha falls through this summer.
Manchester United are reportedly interested in Wolves forward Matheus Cunha ahead of the summer transfer window — and it’s clear why.
The 25-year-old has been a standout performer this season, registering 14 goals and four assists in the Premier League, despite Wolves’ struggles.
In contrast, United’s top scorer Bruno Fernandes has eight league goals, while Rasmus Højlund has scored just three in 28 appearances.
Although the club is prioritising a new striker, there’s also a pressing need for more creativity and attacking threat in support roles — something Cunha could provide.
It is certainly refreshing to see United planning to move forward with a transfer before the market is even open and even more so that they are also looking at alternatives.
United have two Cunha alternatives
David Ornstein has been speaking about United’s interest in Cunha and has stated that there is “optimism” at the club that a deal can be agreed.
However, should the transfer fall through, Ornstein explains that the Reds already have two Premier League players lined up as alternatives.
Antoine Semenyo and Tyler Dibling have both been heavily linked to United in recent months and the journalist says that both of them are considered as alternatives for Cunha.
“Their main focus for the no.10 position is Matheus Cunha of Wolverhampton Wanderers, he has a £62.5 million release clause and he wants to come,” Ornstein told NBC Sport.
“But personal terms would still need to be agreed which is not a formality, let’s see if other clubs come in for him as well, but there is optimism at Old Trafford that they can land him.
“They have alternatives, the likes of Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth and also Tyler Dibling at Southampton but Cunha is the one they are focusing on.
“It’s not close just yet but I could see this one developing rapidly.”
United trying to prepare for important transfer window
So many times in the past, United have seen their transfer activity ruined due to a deal falling through for their number one target.
They have either panicked and signed someone for much more than they should have, or not even made the signing at all. It is one of the reasons they are in their current mess.
It is clear that the intention this summer is to get business done early and it seems like they’re taking into account potential setbacks, such as the Cunha deal falling through.
There is not much room for mistakes to happen this summer and United are trying to prepare themselves as best as possible for when the window opens.
