Rene Muelensteen believes time is running out for Rúben Amorim, as a former Manchester United midfielder is tipped to be the ‘perfect replacement’.
The pressure is building for Rúben Amorim as have only recorded one win so far this season, and speculation begins as to who could replace the Portuguese manager.
Manchester United have now played five games this year, and have failed to perform convincingly, being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Grimsby and narrowly beating Burnley in the club’s only win.
Following a lacklustre Manchester derby, in which the Reds were bested by their blue counterparts, former Rene Meulensteen has commented on the potential managerial shift.
Meulensteen’s credibility is unwavering, as one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s key staff members, his ‘perfect replacement’ could be the right move.
Carrick tipped to replace Amorim
After failing to gain promotion with Middlesbrough, Michael Carrick was sacked and replaced by Rob Edwards, and now finds himself in punditry working for Amazon Prime.
Meulensteen has deemed Carrick as the ‘perfect replacement’ for Amorim. The former Reds midfielder had a brief stint in charge of the club following Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s sacking in 2021.
Speaking to BetVictor, Meulensteen said: “Michael Carrick might be the obvious option if Ruben Amorim is to go. Obviously, Michael Carrick still knows quite a few players that were there when he was there. So he’s still got some good inside information. He obviously knows the club.
“I’m sure that if they would play in a system that suits them, they really play at the best. I think you could see a fantastic Manchester United. Maybe Michael could well be the guy. It’s not magic. It’s common sense more than anything, that’s it and Carrick has got plenty of that.”
Previous reports have stated a ‘five-man-shortlist’ for the potential replacements for Amorim stands, which includes former England manager Gareth Southgate and two overachieving managers, Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola.
Carrick has been tipped as the ideal candidate, with an impressive history at the Reds and more experience gained in management; all roads lead to a potential return.
Time running out for Amorim
The Portuguese manager’s time at the Reds has been brief but unconvincing. Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag midseason and guided the Reds to their worst finish in Premier League history.
The board has backed Amorim consistently, continuing to show their support in the media, despite the poor performances.
The board has also backed Amorim financially, signing four key players this last summer transfer window, including Premier League-proven Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
With over £200 million spent, the United higher-ups will be expecting results, and Amorim has failed to provide so far this season.
The Reds host Chelsea on Saturday, in a crucial matchup, and fans will be hoping to see a turnaround in performance and results.
