Rasmus Højlund has reacted as Manchester United have started to close in on the signing of Slovenian forward Benjamin Sesko.
Manchester United suffered a dismal 15th-placed finish in the Premier League last campaign, which called for drastic changes to be made to Ruben Amorim’s personnel.
Having prioritised attacking reinforcements through the signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, the door was opened for many of United’s attackers to leave.
One of these attackers was Marcus Rashford, who has joined Barcelona on loan, but other want-aways include Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Jadon Sancho.
Given that United’s attacking acquisitions are seemingly not finished, with Benjamin Sesko’s arrival potentially nearing close, the door has now also been opened for Rasmus Højlund to exit the club.
Højlund’s reaction to Sesko signing
According to reports from Manchester Evening News, Sesko is poised to join the Red Devils for upwards of £70 million. The same source also stated in May that the club planned to sell Højlund amid their interest in recruiting a new striker.
Despite these plans, Højlund made it clear in Chicago last week that he planned to stay at United, saying, “I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens.”
With the arrival of Sesko now looking a certainty in the coming week, the Manchester Evening News reports that sources close to the Dane have conceded that he could be forced to seek a move before the transfer deadline if he is unwanted at United.
With Denmark almost certainly qualifying for the World Cup next summer, it will be crucial that Højlund finds a club where he can secure consistent game time, as otherwise, he may struggle to regain his place in the team.
United prepared to cut their losses
Having bought the 22-year-old striker from Atalanta for £72 million only two years ago, it seems a certainty that United will be making a loss on their investment if they part ways with Højlund this summer, and would be willing to sell for around £30 million.
The same report by the Manchester Evening News also states that United are prepared to sell their Danish striker at a loss under the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Højlund’s total fee of £64 million means that his current PSR value is calculated at £38.5 million, due to him being two years into his three-year contract.
With a World Cup only a season away, it seems best for both parties if Højlund departs United this summer and puts an end to an unfortunate chapter in both stories.
