Rasmus Højlund has directly addressed speculation surrounding his future at Manchester United amid a claim about what his agent has been doing behind the scenes.

Rasmus Højlund’s first 18 months at Manchester United have not been smooth following his £72 million transfer from Atalanta in the 2023 summer transfer window.

The Danish international started life at United by scoring five goals in his opening six Champions League games, but it took 14 Premier League appearances until he netted his first goal in the competition.

Højlund went on to become the youngest player in Premier League history to score six games in a row, and ended the 2023/24 season as the club’s top scorer with 16 goals to his name.

However, with 2024/25 underway, Højlund continued to be erratic with his goals. Although he scored five goals in six games when Rúben Amorim first joined Old Trafford, he then went on an unprecedented run of not scoring for 21 fixtures in a row before finally netting against Leicester City last week.

What Højlund’s agent has done ‘behind the scenes’

Amid his lack of goals, there has been speculation surrounding Højlund’s future at United, with the player having been linked with a move back to Italy this summer.

According to TBR, Højlund’s representatives have been working to find possible transfer destinations for the 22-year-old this summer if the conclusion is reached that he does not have a long-term future as United’s first-choice striker.

There is said to be interest from both Serie A clubs and those in the German Bundesliga, with a fresh start for the player reportedly under consideration.

His representatives are said to see see Italy as a good potential destination for the player, as his stock remains high following his spell with Atalanta before his Old Trafford move.

What Højlund said about his United future

However, the player himself has been very clear that he would like to continue at United as he has bought into the project, and as a boyhood fan, it’s a club he wants to succeed at.

When asked how he is finding life under Amorim, Højlund was quoted by Tipsbladet as saying: “I’m focused on the task with Ruben, because that project is incredibly exciting, but Erik was of course one of the reasons why I moved to Manchester United.

“He was doing something good and was a talented coach, but it didn’t work out, and that’s how it is.

“I’m still very happy to be at Manchester United. It’s the club I’ve always dreamed of playing for. And I’m really happy for Ruben. He’s a cool character and a cool person.”
