Rasmus Højlund makes transfer U-turn after ‘positive talks’, Benjamin Šeško move has made up his mind

Rasmus Højlund has seemingly changed his mind about his Manchester United future amid the pending transfer of Benjamin Šeško.

Manchester United are closing in on a deal for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško, with Rúben Amorim focused on adding a new centre-forward to his squad.

United have tabled an offer worth £65 million, plus £9 million in add-ons, as they look to beat the competition to their priority attacking target.

Newcastle had also made a strong push for the 22-year-old, but once United reached an agreement on personal terms with Šeško, his preferred destination became clear.

Negotiations between United and Leipzig are ongoing, with a final agreement expected to be reached soon.

Højlund’s changing his future

Two weeks ago, Rasmus Højlund publicly declared that he plans on staying at United this season, but amid the club’s chase for Šeško, it was detailed in the media that he is becoming resigned to leaving Old Trafford.

With the Dane no doubt keeping one eye on potential moves elsewhere this month, fresh reports from Italy have claimed he is keen on a return to the Serie A.

Two seasons after he left Atalanta to join United for a total £73 million package fee, Højlund is said to be open to the idea of returning to the continent, and has held positive talks with AC Milan, who are looking for a new striker.

The Rossoneri are reportedly ready to pounce on Højlund should an exit pathway materialise amid the pending transfer of Šeško.

A financial loss on Højlund, but performance gain in Šeško

It has been reported across Italy and in the United Kingdom that United’s demands for Højlund sit at around £30-34 million this summer, with the club acknowledging that they will incur a loss on the striker this summer.

His book value is currently around £38 million, meaning his transfer would be recorded as a loss under the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules; however, the club would ultimately view it as a positive move.

While Højlund has struggled to adapt to life leading the line at United, Šeško would bring a better baseline performance level than the Dane, with the Slovenian international being a more rounded and experienced player, despite both being 22 years old.

United’s players reportedly see Šeško as a “perfect” fit for their club, with the board and management also viewing the striker as a major piece in Amorim’s puzzle, and more than just a player who brings ‘potential’ to Old Trafford.

The club are seemingly trading a financial loss for a performance gain next season, and Amorim will no doubt be hoping Šeško’s abilities and talent can help lift the club back into the Champions League next season.
