Raphaël Varane facing transfer decision as second Serie A club “could take steps”
Raphaël Varane is facing a transfer decision as a second Serie A club could “take steps” to try and land him on a free transfer from Manchester United this summer.
Raphaël Varane spent three seasons at Manchester United after his £27 million transfer from Real Madrid in 2021. During this time, he secured two trophies under Erik ten Hag‘s management.
Despite being a fan favourite, Varane’s tenure at Old Trafford was marred by frequent injuries, causing him to miss 45 matches between 2021 and 2024.

Joining in the same summer as Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, Varane proved to be the most successful of the trio, winning both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. He formed an effective yet short-lived partnership with Lisandro Martínez, with both players frequently sidelined by injuries.
Varane leaves Old Trafford as a cherished member of the team, marked by his heartfelt farewell video and emotional celebrations following the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City in late May.
While recent reports have linked him heavily with recently promoted Serie A side Como 1907, where Cesc Fabregas is assistant manager, another Serie A club is said to be considering making a move for the 31-year-old.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, AS Roma are now evaluating the opportunity and “could take some steps” towards signing Raphaël Varane in the next few days.
Varane is currently in Italy and is expected to meet with Fabregas and take a tour of Como’s training facilities on Sunday, but he does not leave Italy for a few days. Fabrizio Romano has said that Como are confident they can agree terms with him.
Should Roma move to sign Varane, the Frenchman would need to make a decision. With Como not in any European competition, Varane would play fewer games, but Roma are in a better position to compete for trophies.
Which ever he decides, we wish him all the best for his future.
