Raphaël Varane revealed the secret behind his partnership at Manchester United with Lisandro Martínez, and Leny Yoro suits it perfectly.

18-year-old centre-back Yoro will replace Varane at United after his Old Trafford departure at the end of last season.

The World Cup-winning defender spent three years at the club before it was decided that he would not extend his contract, and INEOS quickly identified the need for a replacement this summer.

Yoro seemed like an unrealistic signing, considering his original preference of joining Real Madrid. He is one of the most highly-rated young centre-backs in Europe.

However, the Reds managed to convince the teenager that Old Trafford was the right choice for him. He has since completed the first section of his medical at Carrington. A deal is expected to be completed on Thursday.

He will be partnering Lisandro Martínez in the heart of United’s defence – a prospect that excites many supporters who witnessed Varane and Martínez create a brilliant partnership on the pitch.

The two defenders rarely played together last term due to injury but were a strong defensive force during the 2022/23 campaign and also performed excellently when paired for the FA Cup final against Manchester City in Varane’s final game for the club.

Speaking about why his partnership with the Argentine was successful, Varane suggested that it was their different styles that complimented each other.

He told The Times: “I think if you look, we are very different, but together, there is a complementarity.”

Fortunately, this is also true when comparing Yoro and Martínez. The young defender is similar to Varane in style—tall, great in the air, impressive duel winner, pacey, and covers in behind excellently.

That all works together with Martínez’s tenacious style, and the pair will be keen to start working together as soon as the Copa America winner returns from his holidays.
