Raphael Varane has surprisingly fallen down the pecking order at Manchester United under Erik ten Hag this season.

The French defender has started just one of his last five appearances in the Premier League and didn’t appear against Manchester City despite being listed amongst the substitutes.

His place on the bench during United’s crucial Champions League game against Copenhagen earlier this month was another indication that he is not currently in the first-choice partnership.

Rumours suggested that friction between Varane and Ten Hag was the reason behind the dropping of the defender, however, that has since been refuted by reports claiming that Varane accepted the decision.

Ten Hag had explained that it was simply a case of Harry Maguire being in good form, and neither player being his preference on the left side. They are fighting it out for the right centre-back place in his eyes.

Bayern Munich have reportedly registered an interest in the former Real Madrid man, however, and there have been murmurs that he could leave Old Trafford in the upcoming January transfer window.

Latest reports from The Sun have instead stated that the 29-year-old is set to leave the club but it will not come until next summer after the 2023/24 campaign concludes.

It was added manager Ten Hag does not plan to let the defender leave as he hopes to rise into the top four following a poor start to the season.

Varane is interested in a move to Italy or Saudi Arabia, according to the report. He has made 75 appearances for The Red Devils and scored in United’s opening weekend win against Wolves this term.
