Paris St. Germain’s reaction to Manchester United’s bid for Nuno Mendes has been revealed as they take a firm transfer stance on the matter.

Manchester United’s spending habits are set to change dramatically under Rúben Amorim, who is operating on a far tighter budget than his predecessor, Erik ten Hag.

During Ten Hag’s tenure, United splurged over £600 million across five transfer windows, though many believe the signings failed to deliver value for money.

Amorim has already identified key areas in need of improvement, with a striker, a centre-back, a left-back, and potentially more midfield depth high on the agenda.

To address these needs, the club are expected to offload some of their high-value players to generate funds for new signings.

United make bid for PSG’s Mendes

According to French journalist Fabrice Hawkins, United have offered to sign Paris St. Germain left-back Nuno Mendes, with his current contract negotiations with the French side at a standstill.

The report states that Mendes is “not indifferent” to United’s interest in him, with the 22-year-old, with the fact that he made 47 appearances under Amorim at Sporting CP no doubt a factor.

United are hunting for a new left-back in 2025, with injury problems and poor performances having left the club significantly deficient in Amorim’s left wing-back area.

Luke Shaw has missed most of 2024 through injury and is currently sidelined with yet another issue, while Tyrell Malacia’s performances have been inconsistent since he returned from a 17-month absence.

Diogo Dalot has also filled in at left wing-back multiple times during December, but the head coach himself has admitted he knows the Portuguese international is better suited to his natural right-hand side.

PSG react to United’s bid for Mendes

Hawkins further reveals that since United’s bid, PSG have reacted to the news by taking a staunch transfer position that Mendes will not be sold in January.

It is claimed that, despite the contract negotiations having not budged, chiefs of the Ligue 1 outfit still want to extend the left-back’s contract beyond 2026.

However, Mendes is said to believe that the current wages he is being offered do not reflect his importance as a first-team player for manger Luis Enrique, with his feelings reaching the point that he sees himself better off elsewhere.

Further reports have stated that PSG have put a price tag of around £58 million on the player despite his contract ending in 2026, which may cause a big problem for United as they are not flush with cash.

Although the Parisian club are not going to give up on convincing the player to stay, A reunion with Amorim, who gave Mendes his debut in senior football at Sporting in June 2020, just days before his 18th birthday, may appeal to the youngster.
