Premier League confirm Manchester United referee vs Leeds as Rúben Amorim star escapes ban

The Premier League has confirmed who will officiate Manchester United’s upcoming Premier League tie against Leeds on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United will look to turn the page on 2025 as Rúben Amorim gets set for his first fixture of the new year, travelling to Elland Road to take on Leeds United on Sunday afternoon.

It was a year to forget for United, who stumbled at key moments, suffering defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final and limping to a 15th-place finish in the 2024/25 Premier League.

The picture is far brighter this season. Amorim’s side head into the midway point in sixth place, level on points with Chelsea in fifth, while their hosts have enjoyed a strong resurgence.

Leeds endured a difficult opening to the campaign and were dragged into a relegation fight, but Daniel Farke’s side have since found form, going unbeaten in their last five. That run includes draws against Liverpool and Sunderland, as well as home wins over Chelsea and Crystal Palace.

Leeds vs United officials confirmed

Jarred Gillett (pictured above) will be the referee on Sunday afternoon in Leeds. Gillett has officiated nine Premier League fixtures this season and a further two in other cup competitions.

Gillett has not officiated United in this campaign, but did so on three occasions last season – a 1-0 away loss against Nottingham Forest, a 2-0 loss against West Ham at Old Trafford, and a loss on penalties against Manchester City in the Community Shield after a 1-1 draw.

This season, Gillett has issued 29 yellow cards in the Premier League and 36 across all competitions. He has issued one red card this season. He’s also awarded three penalties, all of which have come in the Premier League.

During the game, Neil Davies and Scott Ledger will serve as Gillett’s assistant referees. Robert Jones will be the fourth official on Sunday afternoon, separating Amorim and Farke.

James Bell has been appointed as the Video Assistant Referee. Ian Hussin will act as assistant VAR.

United grateful for yellow card reset

With United having now played 19 Premier League fixtures, the one-match ban that accompanies earning five yellow cards has become ineffective. Any player who collects five yellow cards will no longer receive said punishment.

This is good news for Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, who has found himself on four yellows already this season. Meanwhile, Bryan Mbeumo and Luke Shaw have three apiece.

Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot are on two yellow cards for the campaign, while Noussair Mazraoui, Matheus Cunha, Ayden Hevaen, and Manuel Ugarte all have one each.

However, Players who accumulate 10 yellow cards in Premier League matches up to and including their side’s 32nd fixture will serve a two-match suspension.
