The Premier League have confirmed who will officiate Manchester United’s Premier League tie against Burnley on Wednesday evening.
Manchester United are heading into Wednesday evening’s away trip to Burnley in unfamiliar circumstances following the dismissal of Rúben Amorim on Monday morning.
After Sunday afternoon’s 1-1 draw with Leeds, the United head coach delivered a fiery post-match outburst, directing criticism towards the club’s board over what he described as a lack of authority and trust during a period of inconsistent results.
With Amorim departing Old Trafford, Under-18s head coach Darren Fletcher is expected to take charge from the touchline, and could also remain in the dugout for Sunday’s FA Cup clash against Brighton at Old Trafford.
Despite the upheaval, United remain sixth in the Premier League, level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea, and continue to target a Champions League qualification finish.
Premier League confirm Burnley vs United referee
Stuart Attwell (pictured above) will be the referee on Wednesday evening in Burnley. Attwell has officiated 13 Premier League fixtures this season and one in the Carabao Cup, as well as a UEFA fixture.
Attwell has officiated United once in this campaign, coming in a 2-0 win over Sunderland in October that kicked off a good run of form earlier this season.
This season, Attwell has issued 64 yellow cards in the Premier League and 70 across all competitions. He has issued two red cards this season, one coming through two yellows. He’s also awarded five penalties, all of which have come in the Premier League.
During the game, Lee Betts and Timothy Wood will serve as Attwell’s assistant referees. Sam Allison will be the fourth official on Wednesday evening, separating Amorim and Scott Parker.
Craig Pawson has been appointed as the Video Assistant Referee. Stuart Burt will act as assistant VAR.
Who could become United’s caretaker manager?
Although Fletcher will take over the Burnley tie alongside Travis Binnon, the club is reportedly seeking a more stable temporary solution.

It’s been said that the process to hire a new permanent manager will likely not conclude until the summer, but that in the meantime, United want someone to come in as a caretaker to guide the rest of the season.
It was reported in the immediate aftermath of Amorim’s sacking that former United striker and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær would be keen to return to the club temporarily, which has been a mixed reception among fans.
According to The Athletic, the Norwegian is now one of the names under consideration for the role through the end of the season, suggesting his potential appointment is advancing. However, other names, such as Michael Carrick, are still under consideration.
