Phil Jones has warned Rúben Amorim against signing two Premier League players, with one dubbed as not having enough quality for Manchester United.
Manchester United are looking to secure players with Premier League experience this summer, with Rúben Amorim wanting to raise the physical profile of his squad.
Throughout this campaign, concerns have been raised that many of United’s players cannot cope with the demands of England’s top flight.
United have often found themselves fighting on the back foot against clubs such as Bournemouth, Brighton, and Newcastle, sides that the club have previously dominated.
The club are set to confirm the arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a £62.5 million fee in the coming days, while United are also targeting Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap and Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo to revolutionise Amorim’s attack.
Jones worried about Amad amid Mbeumo interest
Mbeumo is set to cost around £50 million from Brentford, with many seeing this fee as a bargain for a player who has just come off the back of a 20-goal Premier League campaign.
However, former United defender Phil Jones has explained he is apprehensive about signing the Cameroon international as this may throw the future of United’s star forward, Amad, into doubt.
Yes, is a really good player,” Jones said of Mbeumo. “He’s done really well for Brentford, especially in the last two years.
“He’s been so consistent with his performances and his goals and his assists.
“He plays on the right and drifts into the left, so it’ll be interesting to see where he would play if Amad Diallo was out there. So I’m not sure that’s a player who we’ll see at United, but definitely a good player”.
Mateta is not good enough for United
Although United hope to secure Delap’s signature in the coming days, as he chooses between signing for Amorim’s club or one of Chelsea, Newcastle, or Everton, there are also back-up targets.
One of those is Jean-Philippe Mateta, with the Crystal Palace star said to be keen on a transfer to United this summer after winning the FA Cup with Oliver Glasner’s men and scoring 17 goals across all competitions this campaign.
However, Jones worries that the 27-year-old French striker, who is available for around £40 million, may not be of a high enough standard to play for the Old Trafford club.
“Listen, I like Jean-Philippe Mateta,” Jones continued. “I think he’s a top player for Palace, but I’m not sure he’s a Man United player.
“I’d put it like that. I like him, I like what he brings. He brings people into play, he’s a handful to play against, he scores goals, but I’m not sure he’s a Man United player.”
