Peter Schmeichel reveals what he’s told Andre Onana about Man United mistakes
Andre Onana has had a difficult start to life at Manchester United after making several mistakes in recent games against Bayern Munich, Galatasaray and Brentford.
The goalkeeper has replaced David de Gea at Old Trafford and the change was highly anticipated by many supporters.
Onana was coming off the back of a terrific campaign with Inter Milan, where he was crucial to them reaching the Champions League final and earned praise from Pep Guardiola ahead of the game against Manchester City.
He also was Erik ten Hag’s former goalkeeper at Ajax and understands the way that the Dutchman wants to play. It hasn’t exactly worked smoothly so far though.
United have failed to adjust to a dominant ball-playing system, mainly due to injuries in the defence and in midfield, which seems to have limited Onana’s best attribute. The 27-year-old has also made several shot-stopping errors that have knocked his confidence.
Peter Schmeichel, who spent eight years at the club, knows the exact pressures that a Manchester United goalkeeper goes through and believes that the current shot-stopper is focusing on his errors too much.
He has explained that he’s spoken to Onana following his mistakes this season and is urging him to put them to one side so that he can focus on the next save or moment.
“I think a lot of that [Onana’s mistakes] is pressure,” he told Premier League Productions. “I spoke to him after Bayern. I spoke to him after Galatasaray as well and he was very down on the mistakes he made.
“I’m trying to speak to him about what it’s like being at Manchester United and why whatever [mistakes] you’ve made, you have to put it in a box and put it to the side. If you make a mistake in the game, it might be a mistake we can see, it might be a mistake that we don’t see.
“But you wait to think about it and analyse it after the game or at night or whatever. You have to be there for the next moment. If you’re not, you’ll make the next mistake. And now he’s upset the whole team. They will now not trust him even more, and it’s not good.”
