Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has questioned how the Reds managed to miss out on a Premier League defender, who has been ‘a revelation’.
Manchester United look to be having a far better season than they managed last campaign, with Michael Carrick having much credit to take for the Reds’ recent success.
United have won three Premier League matches on the bounce, with their recent victory over Fulham sending Carrick’s side up to fourth in the table.
Two of the Red Devils’ attacking acquisitions were invaluable at the weekend during United’s 3-2 win over Fulham, as both Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško scored vital goals.
Despite their impressive attack, United’s vulnerability at the back has been questioned at times throughout this season, and Peter Schmeichel has questioned why they didn’t pursue a ‘fantastic’ top-flight defender.
Schmeichel raves about Van De Ven
As reported by Sport Witness, the former Danish shot-stopper has sung the praises of Tottenham Hotspur defender, Micky Van De Ven, who could be set to depart the North London side in the summer.
Despite his side’s underperformances, Van De Ven has impressed during his three seasons at The Lilywhites due to his unique blend of immense speed and defensive ability.
Schmeichel spoke on the Dutchman and said, “I think he has been a revelation.
“I think he is a fantastic player. He has a really, really good understanding of the game, and his speed is so valuable if you want to play offensive football.
“I sometimes think that a club like Manchester United or maybe even Liverpool should look for someone like him. Why didn’t they discover a player like him?”
Would Van De Ven suit the Reds?
The 24-year-old, who was linked with a move to Liverpool before they signed Jeremy Jacquet on deadline day, could well be an option for United in the summer.
The Reds may see Harry Maguire depart once his contract comes to an end in the summer, which would leave a potential vacancy for an experienced top-flight centre-half.

The current transfer market seems to be short of experienced, mature central defenders, which could make Van De Ven a fantastic opportunity for any top side.
Whether Maguire departs or not is another question, but if he does, then it will be debated as to whether the Reds look to replace the 32-year-old or whether they trust their up-and-coming youngsters, such as Leny Yoro or Ayden Heaven.
