Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel hopes his former team can turn a corner after winning against Fulham at Craven Cottage in the Premier League.

It was a late winning goal from United captain Bruno Fernandes to secure the victory after Scott McTominay’s earlier goal had been ruled out through VAR.

Whilst Erik ten Hag’s side were far from perfect, the result gives them something to build on for upcoming games against Copenhagen and Luton Town.

The clean sheet was crucial. It was fifth of the season and Harry Maguire was one of the main reasons behind it.

United’s central defender went down with what appeared to be a head injury in the opening minute of the game but went on to dominate the game defensively and put in a solid performance.

His actions with the ball were also praised by his manager after the game. “Not only defending, with the ball very good progressive passing,” he told TNT Sports. “Through the lines, a very good performance.”

And former United shot-stopper Schmeichel agreed with the Dutchman on the defender, adding that he should be ‘undroppable’ for Ten Hag now.

“For me, the Man of the Match was Harry Maguire,” said Schmeichel on Premier League Productions. “Without him, I don’t see Man United winning this game. He’s become an example to all the players, rising up from adversity – he is undroppable for any manager now.”

Following a poor start to the season, with just nine wins out of 16 games, United need to turn a corner in both results and performances now.

The Dane added that he believes results like this, with a winning goal in the last minute, can help the team going forward.

“Football is very much about building on the momentum and hopefully this is a start. You win in a scruffy way but it builds up that belief,” he added.

“They’re going to Copenhagen on Wednesday and they’re going to play a game on a terrible pitch and they have to win that game. So, to win this game and bring that into the next one is fantastic.

“That win is something that can help them start a new period, so let’s hope its more wins in the future.”
