Peter Schmeichel: “Fantastic” Man United player needs to leave, with ideal next move possible
Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel believes that Christian Eriksen needs to leave the club.
First joining the Red Devils in 2022 as then manager Erik ten Hag’s second signing, Eriksen has had a mixed two-and-a-half seasons in Manchester.
The Denmark international, who turns 33 next week, has been an underutilised player under current Man United boss Ruben Amorim.
Making just eight appearances under Amorim, Eriksen, who is entering the final few months of his contract, seems destined to leave Old Trafford this summer.
What’s next for Eriksen?
With Eriksen’s time in the Premier League seemingly coming to an end, former United keeper Peter Schmeichel has suggested Eriksen should return to one of his former clubs.
As quoted by Danish magazine TipsBladet, Schmeichel believes that Eriksen should try and play for Ajax – a club Eriksen would spend much of his youth at, as well as the first four seasons of his professional career.
“I think that Ajax would be the right step for him,” Schmeichel explained. “He is obviously a midfielder and to be one of the best midfielders in the Premier League you have to be able to run back and forth for 90 minutes. That’s how it is.
“He no longer has that energy, but he is a fantastic player and still shows great things on the pitch. I think Ajax would be a great move for him.”
Eriksen’s agent Martin Schoots confirmed back in September that there was a host of clubs interested in signing Eriksen, including an unnamed Dutch club.
Could retirement be on the cards?
Last week former Denmark international Thomas Gravesen suggested that he believes Eriksen will retire at the end of this season.
Speaking with the same outlet Schmeichel did, Gravesen explained that he believes this season may be the last we see of Eriksen in professional football.
To date, Eriksen has made 772 career appearances, 300 of which have been in the Premier League.
