Peter Schmeichel has pinpointed a summer change Erik ten Hag made that significantly improved the performances of one Manchester United star.

André Onana‘s time at Manchester United so far has been one of turbulence, with the Cameroon international making a whole host of significant errors in his opening season.

Replacing long-term goalkeeper David de Gea, who had a staunch set of followers within the club’s fanbase, Erik ten Hag brought in Onana to drastically change United’s style of play, but it didn’t initially work.

Big mistakes in the Champions League against sides such as Bayern Munich and Galatasaray cost United crucial points in the group stage, and Onana became under fire for not being good enough under pressure in the way De Gea was.

This season, however, he has been much more solid. Onana leads the race for the Golden Glove award despite United’s awful start and has been a pillar of calm and sanctity while other players have failed.

Legendary United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel shares this viewpoint. Speaking on Seaman Says, Schmeichel explained that Onana has improved greatly since he’s settled in at United.

“He has been better,” Schmeichel agrees. “He has settled in a lot better, for sure. I think Onana looks more comfortable in the Manchester United goal now.”

Further, the Danish legendary shot-stopper pointed to the decision to change goalkeeping coach from Ten Hag as a big reason for this, as Jelle ten Rouwelaar is well suited to maximising Onana’s strengths.

“I think one of the things that has happened is they have changed the goalkeeping coach,” Schmeichel added. “[Ten Rouwelaar] is probably working more on his strengths and his way in the game.

“[Man United are] is still conceding, and he is part of the team. So it’s not where it should be.

“But, from where he started off, I think he has improved. I think he is giving his team a little bit more confidence so that they can commit more people forward, that he can clean up behind.

“André definitely looks more at ease with being the Man United goalkeeper, and he has taken some of the big mistakes out of his game. And I think that is positive.”
