Manchester United lost 2-1 to Newcastle United in their first loss under Michael Carrick, despite having a 10-man advantage.
For the second time this season, Manchester United have failed to beat a 10-man team, as they have now lost their first game under Michael Carrick.
The first time, Rúben Amorim’s side struggled to break down Everton after a first-half red card, with a brilliant winner finished past Senne Lammens, and the Belgian could do nothing about it. The second time was almost exactly the same, just with a different head coach.
Unlike the Everton loss, United did manage a goal, with Casemiro quickly replying to Anthony Gordon’s penalty in the first half. But conceded late on with Lammens left unsited by Harry Maguire, after William Osula beat Tyrell Malacia with ease.
United looked the second best throughout the match, and Paul Scholes came out after the game, clearly showing his disappointment with the 2-1 defeat.
Scholes hands Carrick “special” blow
Michael Carrick will no doubt be disappointed with his first loss in the United dugout. After the game, he said: “We’re not happy with how we played tonight. Bitterly disappointed.”
The head coach also commented: “We’ve lost one game, we have not played well enough. Tonight hurts but we’ll be better for the next one.”
While Carrick appears happy to move on and forget about the Newcastle result, Scholes does not. The former midfielder took to social media after the game and said: “Michael has definitely got something special about him… cos United have been crap last 4 games.”
United were also poor against Crystal Palace, Everton and West Ham United, but found themselves on the winning side on two occasions, with a late equaliser against West Ham from Šeško.

Carrick has the right mindset
It will be some time before United fans learn if Carrick has the tactical ability to take on the full-time head coach role from next season, but his comments after the game show he has the right mentality to lead the group.

Rather than question his players, Carrick backed them and said the performance merely wasn’t good enough.
Behind closed doors, he may tell them the mentality wasn’t good enough, but it’s good to see a United manager support their players publicly.
Amorim and Ten Hag both failed to do that at times, but Carrick has already proved he can.
