Paul Scholes makes interesting prediction about Man United starlet’s role under Ruben Amorim, he will be even better
Paul Scholes has made an interesting prediction about one Manchester United starlet’s role under Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim will take charge at Manchester United next week following his final game with Sporting this weekend.
The 39-year-old head coach will have a tough job on his hands at Old Trafford, with the club currently 13th in the Premier League table.
Many are expecting him to introduce his 3-4-3 formation to the squad, which some players may suit and others won’t.
Scholes’ prediction about Mainoo
Kobbie Mainoo has been a shining light for United over the last year and is expected to play a key role for Amorim.
The teenager has excelled in deeper midfield roles. Sometimes he was used as the no.6 under Erik ten Hag but mostly he played as the more attacking pivot player, who still had defensive responsibilities.
Paul Scholes has suggested that the 19-year-old may be used in one of the positions behind the striker under Amorim, who uses two no.10s in his system.
“He has then got his two No 10s,” Scholes said on TNT Sports, as per Sportskeeda.
“[Bruno] Fernandes is one of them and I actually think Mainoo could be one of them, too. I think he’ll be a better player higher up; it will suit him more.”
It is a bold call from Scholes and one that could end up happening due to the abilities Mainoo possesses in his game, such as his dribbling.
While it is more likely we see the exciting midfielder in one of the deeper roles, it would not be surprising to see him tested in a higher position.
Scholes addresses United squad under Amorim
“There are three or four players, especially forward players, who don’t want to do the ugly side of the game,” the United legend added.
“He’s going to have to make them do that. We talk about the back three, we have six centre-halves they can choose from.
“He has got the two central midfielders in Casemiro and [Manuel] Ugarte. It’s the wing-backs that could be the problem.
“Does he want wingers who are going to run back? If he wants that, I’m not sure Rashford and Garnacho are right for that.
“Does he want two wing-backs in [Diogo] Dalot and [Noussair] Mazraoui who might be a little bit better defensively but not as good going forward?”
