Manchester United lost 4-3 against Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday evening and Paul Scholes was critical of several players.

It was another good start to a game for Erik ten Hag’s side but again the wheels fell off at the first sign of difficulties in the clash.

Bayern Munich’s opening goal came through a mistake from Andre Onana – although Ten Hag also highlighted the roles of two other players – and then the second goal came just four minutes later.

Those two goals completely turned the game on its head and former United midfielder Scholes was not happy with several defensive players during that period.

For the opening goal, Scholes highlighted Andre Onana’s mistake but also suggested similar to the manager in that there was multiple things wrong in the situation.

“He knows he has made a huge mistake,” Scholes said as he talked through Bayern’s opening goal. “But, I also think there are other things wrong with the goal. I think Manchester United in the first half played very well, but a few lapses in concentration and before you know it you are 2-0 down. It’s a big mistake from him and he needs to recover from that and concentrate.”

Moving on to the second goal, which was scored by Serge Gnabry, and the United legend named three United defenders in their roles for the strike.

“We mentioned this lad (Musiala) before the game. He has great skill, a tremendous turn of pace, but I am not sure what (Lisandro) Martinez is doing as well.

“(Diogo) Dalot is beaten, but Martinez goes backwards, him and (Sergio) Reguilon have one player between them and Reguilon should take that man and (Lisandro) Martinez should go to Gnabry who scores the goal, but he ends up going back and if anything, he blocks the keeper’s view and there is nothing he could do about it.”

United will hope to have an improved squad to face Burnley on the weekend with multiple players close to returning from injury.

Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo and Raphael Varane have been see back in training.
