Paul Pogba’s Manchester United return chances revealed as “good relationship” with club director explained
The chances of Paul Pogba returning to Manchester United have been explained with Rúben Amorim keen to strengthen in midfield this summer.
Paul Pogba left Manchester United in 2022 upon the expiry of his six-year contract, marking the end of a second spell that never quite lived up to expectations. United had brought him back from Juventus in 2016 for a then-world-record £89 million, making him the most expensive player in history at the time.
The French midfielder enjoyed a promising start, playing a key role in United’s Europa League and League Cup triumphs under José Mourinho. However, his relationship with Mourinho deteriorated, leading to inconsistency on the pitch and tension off it.
Under Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Pogba briefly rediscovered his form, showcasing his undeniable talent. Yet, persistent injuries in the latter years of his United career limited his influence and added to frustrations surrounding his performances.
Despite flashes of brilliance, Pogba’s time at Old Trafford was often overshadowed by scrutiny. His price tag made him a frequent target for criticism, with debates over his commitment and consistency persisting throughout his stay.
Returning to Juventus in 2022, Pogba’s career took another turn for the worse when he received a four-year doping ban for using prohibited substances. However, the suspension was reduced to 18 months last month. Now a free agent after Juventus terminated his contract, Pogba is searching for a new club in hopes of reviving his career.
Pogba’s United return chances explained
With Pogba searching for a new club, his name has come up many a time in the last six weeks concerning United, with Amorim’s side lacking in a creative outlet.
Rumours were further fueled when he posted a cartoon of him and United star man Amad together on Instagram, as the pair are known to have a good relationship, accompanied by a second photo stating, “Let’s see what’s coming…” on his page.
However, as confirmed by The Athletic, no talks were held between United and Pogba’s camp regarding a potential return to Old Trafford for the 31-year-old French midfielder.
But, the report has also revealed that those who represent Pogba continue to maintain a “good relationship” with United technical director Jason Wilcox, who has been heavily involved in the club’s recent incomings.
Signing Pogba would not be within United’s current transfer strategy of signing young talents through low-cost deals and offering wage packages that help stable the finances at United, but it’s hard not to think that he would improve Amorim’s side.
Amorim needs new midfielders
Even if signing Pogba is entirely out of the question, there is little doubt that United need to bring in midfield reinforcements during the summer transfer window.
As UtdDistrict revealed last year, Amorim wants the club to bring in a new attacking midfielder and a new defensive midfielder to improve the squad, and with further departures looming, this only becomes more of a necessity.
Christian Eriksen will leave United once his contract expires in June, and Casemiro is expected to leave the club after being almost entirely frozen out of Amorim’s starting teams in the last month.
Further, question marks remain over the feasibility of fitting Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo into the squad, although the latter has been touted as a possible attacking midfield option for the future.
