Paul Merson names four ‘outstanding’ Manchester United players after 2-1 win vs Chelsea
Paul Merson was complimentary of several Manchester United players following their 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Old Trafford.
The Reds produced a dominant display in the Premier League clash after there were question marks within the media over the squad’s commitment to their manager’s project.
Scott McTominay grabbed the double – making him the club’s top goalscorer this season – but you could have picked out almost any player for praise.
Former Arsenal player and current Sky Sports pundit, Paul Merson, was extremely complimentary of some of United’s players after the win over Chelsea.
The 55-year-old highlighted the midfield duo of McTominay and Sofyan Amrabat, as well as the wingers Antony and Alejandro Garnacho. He believes that the wide men will keep Marcus Rashford out of the side after he was dropped to the bench.
“I thought they were very good tonight,” Merson told Sky Sports. “First-half, Fernandes should score and they’d go on and win the game easier, but their attitude was spot on tonight.
“It was embarrassing at Newcastle but tonight they were outstanding, Absolutely outstanding. They closed Chelsea down and I thought they were quite shocked, thought they wouldn’t do that and they took the ball off them umpteen times.
“I thought they were very good, they’ve set the bar. I’d be shocked if Rashford played this weekend, I don’t think it’s the message to send out. He’s put a team out tonight under severe pressure to turn up against Chelsea and they all performed, they all closed down well. The two wingers were very good, Amrabat was like he was in a Morocco shirt. They were absolutely outstanding.
“I think [McTominay’s] record now, it’s his best return in the Premier League and we’re not even halfway through, he’s been outstanding. Fair play to him, kept himself fit. Great attitude.”
