Manchester United have reportedly engaged in club-to-club talks to sell one star for around £38 million this summer after his failings under Rúben Amorim.
Manchester United are starting to focus on sales this summer as Rúben Amorim looks to completely reshape his squad at Old Trafford.
The club have already signed Matheus Cunha for £62.5 million from Wolverhampton Wanderers and are in talks to secure Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, although their bid of £45 million plus a further £10 million in add-ons was rejected as talks continue.
United want to add a new striker and midfielder to the squad this summer, and the possibility of a new goalkeeper is not out of the question should André Onana depart.
While several players are already confirmed to leave United when their contracts expire at the end of this month, there are a number of others who are expected to depart this summer.
United in club-to-club talks for Højlund
While those like Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Jadon Sancho are all guaranteed to leave, young striker Rasmus Højlund is a name that has been circulating in Italian media over the last few weeks, following his struggles under Amorim last season.
Although the player has informed his representatives that his top choice is still to remain at United, Inter Milan are thought to be targeting the player this summer in a bid to revolutionise their squad following Simone Inzaghi’s departure.
According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Inter now feel they are leading the race to sign the 22-year-old this summer, and “good reasons to be optimistic” as they look to secure at least two new forwards.
The Danish international “has opened up on the possibility of returning to Serie A” this summer following his spell with Atalanta. However, the Nerazzurri are hoping to strike a deal that would see them sign Højlund on loan with the option to buy for £38 million.
Due to their tight finances, United are pushing for Højlund’s exit from Old Trafford to be permanent. Inter’s sporting director, Piero Ausilio, travelled to London on Wednesday to establish contact with United, showing hope that a middle ground could be reached.
What are United planning on doing with their sale money?
With Cunha over the line and Mbeumo hopefully following shortly behind, the two wingers will take up the entirety of United’s pre-sales budget this summer.
Amorim wants a new defensive midfielder and is desperate for a new striker. There have been whispers in the last few weeks that the club may make a move for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres later this month, provided enough sales can be made.
According to reports from England earlier this week, the club initiated contact with the Swede’s camp to gauge the possibility of a summer signing, considering their lack of Champions League football.
As for the middle of the park, United may lose out on 25-year-old Brazilian player Ederson, with Al-Hilal moving in on him after United captain Bruno Fernandes rejected their mega-contract offer.
United have therefore been touted to reignite their interest in 22-year-old Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney, who has been fantastic for Michael Carrick before the ex-Red Devil midfielder’s sacking.
