“One of the best…” Manchester United star’s brother defends star after “awful” 90-minute Europa League final display

One Manchester United star has been defended by his brother after receiving criticism for the part he played in the club’s Europa League final loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

Many Manchester United fans were left furious with several players after the disappointing defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.

Rúben Amorim’s side failed to score, despite dominating possession and only allowing Tottenham three shots, with just one being on target.

Brennan Johnson claimed the goal in the 42nd minute, but it was Luke Shaw who got the final touch as the ball trickled into the goal.

Pape Sarr’s cross was left by Harry Maguire, before being flicked by Johnson and eventually turned goalwards by a scrambling Shaw.

However, even with United’s poor defending, the attacking players failed to trouble Ange Postecoglou’s side, apart from a headed effort by Rasmus Højlund, which was cleared acrobatically by Micky van de Ven.

Onana defended by his brother after final loss

Andre Onana was branded as “awful” by fans for Tottenham’s goal, as the goalkeeper couldn’t get across his goal quickly enough to stop the effort despite the slow pace of the ball.

Speaking to Vision 4, with his comments relayed by Le Bled Parle, Onana’s brother, Christian, came out in defence of the former Ajax goalkeeper after the Europa League final.

“It doesn’t change his status as a great player,” he said, “He’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and what’s more, he’s an Indomitable Lion. A lion can slip, but he never falls.”

Several reports have indicated that Onana may not be the man in between the sticks at Old Trafford next season, stating that Amorim wants to move him on, along with Altay Bayindir.

Tom Heaton could also leave United this season, after a Fabrizio Romano report, saying that Heaton and Jonny Evans will both retire from professional football at the end of this season.

Onana transfer suits all parties

Before Erik ten Hag signed Onana for the Red Devils, the Cameroonian was considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world, having just played in the Champions League final against Manchester City.

However, the goalkeeper now appears to be struggling to reach his former ability, possibly due to the ungodly pressure that United players, especially goalkeepers, are put under.

Onana was signed for his ability on the ball, but he has yet to show those strengths. This is partly due to being asked to kick it long because the defence struggles to play out from the back.

A move away could see Onana return to his former glory and United sign an out-and-out shotstopper, which could give stability to the team during the long-term rebuild.
