Ole Gunnar Solskjær correctly predicted Scott McTominay’s career as Napoli move draws closer
Ole Gunnar Solskjær correctly predicted the type of career Scott McTominay would have at Manchester United as the player is set to move to Napoli.
Scott McTominay is set to sign for Serie A side Napoli from Manchester United after the club accepted a bid of just over £25 million for the Scotland international.
Although personal terms are yet to be finalised, all signs point to the fact that McTominay has played his final game under Erik ten Hag and will switch to Antonio Conte’s new project before the Friday evening deadline.

McTominay has proven himself to be a valuable tool for all the managers he has played under. He has provided key moments for Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and Ten Hag, most notably the ten goals he scored last campaign, many of which were vital in winning fixtures.
However, after his maiden goal for United’s first team against Wolves away from home in 2019, Solskjær made two predictions about McTominay that would ring true as the player departs.
“Scott has never ever let us down, and he never disappoints when he plays,” Solskjaer told reporters at his press conference. “And tonight was another very, very fine performance by Scotty.
“So, it won’t be hard to see him play many, many games for Man United because he has got such a great mentality. He is so athletic. He can play in different positions.
“Today we feel that’s his best position, like a high midfielder, but he can play in that defensive role easily, like he has done against PSG and Liverpool. So I was very, very pleased with him.”
Firstly, Solskjær’s prediction about McTominay having a long career is spot on. The 27-year-old has made 225 appearances for United’s senior team while having many more during his time in the academy set-up.
He has scored 29 goals and provided eight assists across his many seasons at the club and has won two trophies – the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in the last two seasons.
Secondly, Solskjær’s point about playing as a high midfielder also rings true. While the player was sometimes ridiculed for his lack of defensive abilities in midfield, he has truly shone in more of an attacking role, hence his ten goals last campaign.
Ten Hag has also often stated that he believes this is McTominay’s best position and various reports from Italy state that this is where Conte wants him to play.
Should the move materialise, we want to wish McTominay the very best in his next Italian adventure.
