“Now they say…” – Fabrizio Romano provides interesting Carlos Baleba update after new Manchester United contact

Fabrizio Romano has provided another interest update on Manchester United’s interest in Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba after fresh contact.

Manchester United made a strong start to the summer transfer window, securing Matheus Cunha from Wolves and highly rated defender Diego Leon.

After protracted negotiations, Bryan Mbeumo also joined the squad in time for the US tour before United signed RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško earlier this week.

United are still active in the market and have reportedly begun talks with Brighton over midfielder Carlos Baleba, who is understood to be eager to make the switch.

Baleba signed for Brighton from Lille in the summer of 2023 and has since made 61 Premier League appearances for the Seagulls.

Reports explained that United approached Brighton about the player this week and have also had positive talks with the player’s camp.

Fabrizio Romano provides interesting Baleba update

Fabrizio Romano has since provided another interesting update on this Baleba saga, including that United’s chiefs were in contact with the player’s representatives on Saturday.

Baleba was absent from Brighton’s latest pre-season game with an injury but the Italian journalist has confirmed that United are pushing on the player side.

Romano also explained that Brighton do not want to see but that United want to essentially test the waters and see if a deal is possible this summer.

“I told you last night that Man United maintain contacts with the agents of Carlos Baleba and I want to confirm that – Manchester United are speaking again and again, even today, with the agents of Carlos Baleba about the contract, about the salary,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.

“So Man United on the player side, they want to advance and then see what happens with Brighton. At the moment with Brighton, it is still not something advanced or concrete or easy.

“But the contacts are still ongoing, the player is not closing doors to Manchester United and so Man United, from what I feel, they want to try.

“They want to try and say, ‘okay we believe Baleba is the perfect player, we are very happy with our market’, because Man United signed Mbeumo, Cunha and Sesko, the players they wanted.

“Now they say, ‘If we can get the perfect midfielder, good, otherwise we will move on’, but Man United want to try and this is why even today on a Saturday, they continue to speak with the agents of Baleba and the contract is a topic that for Manchester United will not be a problem.

“So let’s see what’s going to happen there but for sure it is an interesting situation to follow.”

United fans desperate for new midfielder

It feels strange to even be considering a potential £100 million move after already spending around £200 million on three attackers this summer.

Every report is reminding fans that this would be a difficult deal to complete but there is never any smoke without fire and it is certainly something that the club feels like is a possibility.

Baleba’s clear openness to join United is a positive and the one thing that could open up a potential deal but there remains many hurdles to get any sort of agreement over the line.

United fans have been demanding that the midfield improves at Old Trafford and this would be a major upgrade on their current options and another step in the right direction.
