Manchester United have revealed their latest transfer plan as Rúben Amorim demands signings in the January transfer window.
Rúben Amorim handed Senne Lammens his debut in goal as Manchester United hosted Sunderland at a rain-soaked Old Trafford in the Premier League.
Goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Šeško, along with a clean sheet from Lammens, capped off a perfect afternoon in Manchester for the Reds. The goalkeeper earned significant praise for his composed and intelligent performance.
Making his debut for United, Lammens looked comfortable from the first whistle, displaying his distribution abilities early on.
It was clear that the crowd was behind the Belgian, with a roar of cheers erupting every time the Belgian made a save, making a great stop just before the full-time whistle to earn a deserved clean sheet on his debut.
Amorim wants an experienced option
Altay Bayındır has been Amorim’s preferred starting option so far this season, but has failed to establish himself as a reliable enough keeper to be United’s No.1. The Turkish international simply hasn’t been good enough this season, making a couple of mistakes already this season that have cost his side valuable points.
On his debut, Lammens secured a clean sheet for United, a feat that had been rare under Amorim, with it being just the seventh time since the start of 2025 that Man Utd had shut out their opponents.
As reported by FootballInsider’s Transfer Corresponder Pete O’Rourke, Amorim is pushing for an experienced option to be the starting keeper and is even looking at a potential January signing, even though some would say that the midfield should be a priority if United are going into the market.
He said: “Lammens is probably a long-term signing, still young and obviously a lot to prove still if he is to be a Man United number one in the future. Bayindir is number one right now for Amorim, and then Lammens is the number two after obviously letting Onana leave the club on loan.
“They have got issues between the sticks and have kept just one clean sheet this season. If their goalkeeping issues persist, it’s going to be something they look at in January and then in the summer as well. Amorim is looking at an experienced goalkeeper to come in and make the spot his own to provide a bit of stability and confidence in the defence.”
Emi Martinez remains an option, but Lammens deserves time
During the summer transfer window, United’s two main goalkeeping targets were Lammens and Emiliano Martinez, with the club opting to sign the former over the World Cup-winning goalkeeper.
After what would have been a ‘dream’ move for the 33-year-old failed to materialise, he has since been brought back into the Aston Villa squad.
It was previously reported that United could go back in for Martinez if Lammens failed to adapt to life in the Premier League, but judging from his debut and his ‘outstanding’ performances in training, it has been a positive start to life in Manchester for the Belgian.
Lammens is deservedly set for a run of games after the international break, with their first fixture back a tough away trip to Liverpool, before playing Brighton, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur, which should be a good indicator of whether the 23-year-old is ready to be the starting keeper or not.
If in these performances Amorim feels that he needs an experienced goalkeeper, then a move for Martinez could certainly materialise, with both parties seemingly wanting the move.
