“No proposal…” Fabrizio Romano shuts down Manchester United rumours, key player ‘wants to stay’ under Rúben Amorim

A number of Manchester United players have been linked with a move away this summer, but one in particular in recent has been the subject of increasing reports suggesting he could leave Old Trafford when the summer window opens.

INEOS and Ruben Amorim will be looking to kickstart the revolution at Old Trafford this summer, with a number of players anticipated to leave the club.

Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, and Jadon Sancho are at the moment the clear and obvious players expected to depart, but there are a few current regular starting first-team players who could also follow them out the door.

With rumors of United searching the market for a new goalkeeper, the links have begun to become stronger around the future of the club’s number one.

No contract proposal for Onana

Andre Onana has been linked with a move away from Manchester United this summer quite heavily, particularly in recent days, but Fabrizio Romano has confirmed there is yet to be a proposal or any concrete talks for the player despite recent claims he was on his way to Saudi Arabia.

Speaking on the situation in his GiveMeSport newsletter, Romano had this to say on Onana: “No proposal or concrete talks at this stage; it’s still March, so probably too early. We will see later.”

This comes after a string of reports that the club was looking for a new goalkeeper to replace the Cameroon international, who, according to Rob Dawson, does not want to leave this summer and will remain at United as long as he is part of the plans.

Ruben Amorim has come to the defense of Onana at times this season and has shown no indications in public that he has given up on his goalkeeper. Altay Bayindir has failed to nail down a starting place ahead of the former Inter Milan shot stopper since his arrival at the club last season from Fenerbahçe.

Who could United sign if Onana does leave?

If Onana does leave the club this summer, there are a number of goalkeepers on the market United could turn towards. Diogo Costa is someone who was admired in the past under Erik ten Hag, but a move this summer would perhaps prove too expensive for the Portuguese international.

Right now, however, there does not seem to be anything concrete in the Onana departure links, with the player adamant he wants to stay.

One player who has impressed in the Premier League this campaign and would no doubt be available at a cut price due to his team’s expected relegation is Mads Hermansen. Leicester are anticipated to be relegated, and despite the number of goals his side has conceded this season, Hermansen would represent a clever purchase by INEOS.

An alternative route, and perhaps a more cost-efficient one, would be to put the trust in Elyh Harrison, who is reportedly highly rated internally at the club. Harrison has been in Amorim’s first team squad for a number of weeks now, and if United do truly trust his abilities, it could be something they look towards if Onana does depart.
