“No meaning…” – Mikel Arteta dismisses Man Utd question regarding Ruben Amorim ‘revenge’ for Arsenal
Mikel Arteta has dismissed suggestions that he is looking for revenge against Ruben Amorim as his Arsenal side gear up to face Manchester United on Wednesday evening.
Manchester United face Arsenal in Ruben Amorim’s fourth game in charge of the club as they travel to the Emirates Stadium for the Premier League clash.
After drawing against Ipswich Town away from home in his first outing, Amorim led the team into back-to-back victories at Old Trafford against Bode/Glimt and Everton.
The 39-year-old will now look to pull something off against Arsenal, who are chasing Liverpool in the league at the moment.
United come into the game as clear underdogs, with no win at the Emirates since 2019.
However, Amorim has won against The Gunners much more recently than that. His Sporting side knocked Mikel Arteta’s team out of the Europa League in March 2023.
After drawing both games in the round-of-16, the Portuguese side won on penalties at Arsenal’s stadium to pull off an incredible victory.
Arsenal were one of the favourites to win the competition that season and Arteta has been asked whether he is looking for revenge against Amorim on Wednesday.
The Spaniard pushed back on that suggestion, claiming that the previous games against Amorim have ‘no meaning’ in this upcoming game.
“Not revenge,” smiled Arteta when asked if he will be eying getting even against his Portuguese counterpart.
“In football it is about another opportunity and whether you have beat or lose against any opponent, another game will be very different to the past.
“We learned that, we played against Sporting a few days ago and it was very different to two years ago. It has no meaning.”
United are currently ninth in the Premier League but sit just six points behind Arsenal (2nd) and four points behind Brighton (4th) and Manchester City (5th).
