Reading manager Paul Ince has explained the difference in Manchester United under Erik ten Hag from a year ago after his side’s FA Cup fourth-round exit at Old Trafford on Saturday night.

United were 3-1 victors on the evening as Casemiro scored twice before Fred added another. They remain the only English club fighting on four different fronts.

The Reds are unbeaten at home since September and have lost just twice at the Theatre of Dreams all season.

Ten Hag has revitalised the club after a dismal campaign last term and former United midfielder – and current Reading boss – Paul Ince believes he’s changed the feeling around Old Trafford.

“No disrespect, but if we have played United a year ago, we would have felt we could beat them,” Ince told reporters. “I felt that they had lost their presence and teams were coming to Old Trafford feeling they could get something.

“Under Ten Hag in such a short space of time, he has lifted the whole club. The last two or three years have been tough for the fans, and it looks like Ten Hag is starting to bridge that gap.

“It’s going to take time but they are starting to get a presence about them. It might take two or three years but he seems to have really got the club in the right position to go forward.”

Ten Hag has the chance of winning silverware in his first season in charge of the cup as United look to be favourites to win the Carabao Cup.

After the win on Saturday, he was clear in his message that he wants to end the six-year drought of silverware for the club.

“[My aim is] to win titles, we are here to win trophies. We have to work hard.”
