Newcastle stance on Anthony Gordon to Man Utd revealed amid Old Trafford ‘interest’

Amid interest from a number of Premier League giants, including Manchester United, Newcastle United have revealed their stance on a potential sale of Anthony Gordon.

Having come through the Everton Academy, Anthony Gordon burst onto the scene in the 2021/22 season, scoring four and assisting two to help the side avoid relegation by just four points.

After being named Everton’s Young Player of the Year, Gordon earned himself a move to Newcastle United in January 2023 for a fee of around £40 million.

While in his first season, he performed relatively well, in his second season in the North East, the 24-year-old firmly established himself as one of the league’s best attacking talents, scoring 11 and assisting 15 in the Premier League.

This season, the winger has been electric in the Champions League, recently scoring four goals in a 6-1 win over Qarabag in the Champions League play-offs, taking his tally in the competition this season to 10 goals and two assists.

Newcastle’s firm stance revealed

As a result of his impressive performances over the years, interest in Gordon has been mounting, and amid interest from Liverpool, Manchester United and other giants in a potential summer move, Newcastle’s stance on his exit has been revealed.

TEAMtalk has reported that the winger’s future remains firmly in Newcastle’s hands after Gordon signed a new five-year deal in 2024 with no release clause in the contract.

Journalist Ben Jacobs recently revealed on The United Stand that United have ‘internally discussed’ a move for Gordon this summer, with an exit possible should Newcastle fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.

The outlet reports that signing the forward will be no easy feat, with an ‘extraordinary’ offer required to lure the winger away from Newcastle, with the club’s hierarchy indicating that they are determined not to be forced into any sales.

Man Utd have to focus on other positions

Despite coming through Everton’s academy, Gordon is a boyhood Liverpool fan and would reportedly be very interested in making the move back to Merseyside should they make a move for the winger.

As seen by last summer’s long, drawn-out transfer saga between Liverpool and Alexander Isak, Newcastle will stand firm on their transfer demands, and United would most likely be priced out of a move, considering the other areas that need improving.

Manchester United simply must sign some midfielders this summer, with the departure of Casemiro and the uncertain futures of Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes emphasising that.

Having spent a significant amount of money on the front line last summer, United will not have much budget remaining after their proposed midfield transformation this summer, with the likes of Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson all demanding sizeable fees.
