Manchester United have delayed announcing their decision on the future of Mason Greenwood as they want to display the findings of their investigation with key stakeholders.

Greenwood, 21, has been suspended by the club since January 2022 after photos and videos alleging he had domestically abused his partner surfaced on social media.

Although he was arrested and a case built against him by the Crown Prosecution Service, this case was ultimately dropped due to key witnesses not stepping forwards.

Once the case was dropped, United began an internal investigation into the situation to make a final decision on the future of the academy graduate.

It was widely reported that the final decision would come before the start of the Premier League season. The Reds won their opening fixture against Wolves on Monday evening and we are still in the dark.

Since then, it has been reported by The Athletic reporter Laurie Whitwell that it is now possible there will be no resolution until the September international break.

The change in timeline has occurred because the club wants to explain the findings of their internal investigation with key stakeholders. This is said to include United’s women’s team and fan advisory board.

However, it is important to note that the report also stated that the club insist the decision on Greenwood will be taken by chief executive Richard Arnold and will be based on the facts established by the club investigation, rather than the opinions of any of the women’s team.

Players in the women’s team have received abuse online following incorrect reports that suggested they would play a role in the decision-making process in relation to Greenwood.

A group of Manchester United fans protested against Greenwood’s potential return ahead of United’s game against Wolves. Named ‘Female Fans Against Greenwood’s Return’ on social media, they released a statement last week.

Greenwood has been training individually away from Carrington with the permission of the club and was recorded during a session last week.
