Manchester United are expected to make numerous signings in the summer transfer window as INEOS look to improve the playing squad at Old Trafford.

While it is unexpected that progression is made until the decision over Erik ten Hag’s future is made, there are many priorities coming into the market.

Firstly, the Reds need to beef up their defensive unit after the departure of Raphaël Varane. It is reported that two centre-backs are expected to sign, as well as a potential left-back addition.

Jarrad Branthwaite seems to be the priority target in central defence, with the likes of Leny Yoro and Jean-Clair Todibo among those linked.

Meanwhile, United are also looking to improve their midfield with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen likely facing exits this summer. Joao Neves of Benfica has been heavily linked, as well as Sporting Lisbon star Morten Hjulmand.

An additional striker to support Rasmus Højlund is also a much-needed priority. It is understood that this will likely be a squad player rather than a big-money signing.

Of course, the prospect of new signings is something that excites supporters and they are always keen to find out what shirt numbers those players will get.

With several exits already confirmed this summer, we have listed every shirt number available under no.40 for the likes of Branthwaite and Neves should they decide to make the move to Old Trafford to wear the famous red.

Available shirt numbers

3, 9, 13, 15, 19, 26, 27, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 38

Likely to become available

There are also a number of players who seem likely to depart the club this summer and so their shirt numbers could also be up for grabs.

For example, Casemiro (no.18), Christian Eriksen (no.14), Victor Lindelöf (no.2) and Jadon Sancho (no.25) could all be heading to the exit door.

Sofyan Amrabat’s no.4 is another which could be selected if United decide they do not want to activate the buy-option in his loan contract.

Of course, there could also be potential shirt number changes within the existing squad – such as Rasmus Højlund moving to no.9, leaving no.11 available – with five expected changes listed here.
