Napoli director breaks silence on Scott McTominay transfer situation with Chelsea playing key role
Napoli director Giovanni Manna has broken his silence on the transfer situation surrounding Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.
Corriere dello Sport reported that Napoli’s sporting director, Manna, is scheduled to hold talks with United regarding the potential transfer of Scott McTominay.
The Italian club recently had a loan offer for the Scottish international turned down, as United are seeking at least £25 million for the player, while Manuel Ugarte is the midfield signing they desire.
McTominay, an academy graduate, has made 253 appearances for the Old Trafford outfit, scoring 29 goals and providing nine assists.
While United have made him available for transfer this summer, no club has yet been willing to meet their asking price. However, new reports have claimed that Fulham have re-opened talks for a potential transfer.
When asked about the midfielder this week, Napoli director Manna was complimentary about the player but stressed that he cannot go into any detail on their approach.
“McTominay and [Billy] Gilmour are very good players,” he told reporters, as per MEN. “But they’re not out players so, no comment. Full focus on the game, and then we will focus again on transfers.”
However, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Naples club is awaiting a substantial cash influx from Victor Osimhen’s sale this summer, with the striker heavily linked to Chelsea.
The report indicated that Napoli can only afford to meet United’s asking price for McTominay if they sell the Nigerian forward.
This implies that the potential transfer hinges on Chelsea’s decision, as the club, despite signing numerous players this summer, still needs a top-class striker in their squad.
Manna also discussed the latest updates regarding the 25-year-old forward, whose desire to leave the Serie A club is “clear.”
“It’s an objective fact, what the coach said, the situation is blocked. Victor is an important player, with an important value and conditions,” the Napoli director added.
“His desire is clear. We tried to maintain the integrity of the squad at this moment. We are not the only club in this situation, and we’ll see what happens over the next 10 days.
“At this time, it is not right to say what sensations there are. We are working with his entourage to find the best solution.
“As we said, he is an important player, so it’s not that we can just find him anywhere. He is under contract for another two seasons, so clearly, if we don’t find a solution by August 30, we’ll have to talk to the player.”
