“My mentality…” – Alejandro Garnacho’s clear response to transfer speculation ahead of Man Utd vs Athletic Bilbao

Alejandro Garnacho has responded to questions around his future during a press conference with Ruben Amorim ahead of Thursday’s game against Athletic Bilbao.

Manchester United have the biggest game of the season, and possibly the decade, against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, and Alejandro Garnacho will be a major part of getting to the final and winning the whole competition if his side gets there.

Garnacho joined Ruben Amorim for the press conference before the game on Wednesday and was asked some questions about his future at the club. The Argentine has been linked with a move away, with Italian side Napoli in particular showing an interest.

United decided against selling the winger in January, but a move this summer has yet to be ruled out as they aim to fund a rebuild, which will hopefully push Amorim’s side that step closer to challenging for the big prizes again.

Garnacho has 21 goal contributions for the team this season, with only captain Bruno Fernandes boasting more in the side.

Garnacho is happy at United despite transfer speculation

Alejandro Garnacho has confirmed he is happy at Manchester United despite speculation and made clear he has a contract at the club until 2028. Napoli are expected to attempt to sign the academy graduate this summer, but he maintains he is happy at Old Trafford.

“I have a contract here until 2028, and I’m happy here,” the 20-year-old told reporters on Friday afternoon.

“If we win the Europa League, we will be in the Champions League, and we will face next season with a different mentality and in a different way.

“In November and December it was difficult for me, but my mentality is to keep working and trying and show the manager and staff that I have to play.”

United have been rumoured to be open to selling Garnacho, but nothing concrete has been decided regarding the player’s future. INEOS are eager to strengthen the squad this summer, but with Garnacho currently one of the most in-form players in the team, they may think twice about a sale.

United must keep Garnacho

Manchester United have to keep hold of Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentine is raw, but it’s clear he has world-class potential, and for a club focusing on bringing young talent into the club under INEOS, it would be a shame to offload one of the best young talents in Europe out of it.

The 20-year-old has continued to grow in Amorim’s system, and a pre-season with the manager would only see that progress continue going into next season. It’s no coincidence top European clubs like Napoli and Chelsea have shown interest in a player like Garnacho; they both understand his talent.

A youthful core of Amad and Garnacho, with the likes of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbuemo possibly coming through the door, means that United can be a frightening side to face not only in the present but also going forward in the future as well.

Nurturing your own will always feel better than going out and signing the newest toy on the market, and Alejandro Garnacho, despite his flaws, is someone Manchester United must keep hold of.
