Michael Carrick admits one wish as Rúben Amorim takes charge of Manchester United
Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has wished for one thing as Rúben Amorim becomes head coach at Old Trafford.
Rúben Amorim has officially taken over as Manchester United’s head coach following Erik ten Hag’s departure after a disastrous start to the season.
Ten Hag was dismissed at the end of last month, with United languishing in 14th place in the Premier League and 21st in their Europa League group, a stark decline that prompted the club to act.

While Amorim has been appointed, he has yet to lead the team due to complications surrounding his release clause. His managerial debut is set for Sunday, 24 November, when United travel to face Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
During the interim period, Ruud van Nistelrooy stepped into the role, guiding United to three wins and a draw. However, he has since departed as Amorim’s backroom staff begin their work at Carrington.
Carrick’s Amorim wish
Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick, now in charge of Championship side Middlesborough, has expressed his delight in Amorim.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Carrick admitted that he wishes Amorim will settle into his new role quickly so that the “good people” at United can help take the club back to the top.
“It’s obviously a big challenge, incredible football club with huge expectations,” Carrick said. “It’s where you want to be in terms of testing yourself against the best and he’s there so I hope he does well.
“I’m obviously a supporter and my family are. We love the club so I really hope it works out. There are good players there, good people in the club, so hopefully he goes there and settles in really quickly.”
Familiar with the role
Carrick himself is no stranger to the role Rúben Amorim is about to take up at United.
Carrick was caretaker manager at Old Trafford for three games after the club sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjær in November 2021.
He guided United to two wins and a draw before Ralf Rangnick was appointed interim manager for the remainder of the season.
He oversaw a 2-0 win over Villareal in the Europa League, a 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League, and a 3-2 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford, thanks to a Cristiano Ronaldo brace and a third from Bruno Fernandes.
