Micah Richards has come to the defence of one criticised Manchester United star and Ruben Amorim completely agrees with his stance.
Manchester United began their Premier League campaign on the weekend and unfortunately came out on the losing side against Arsenal.
Despite the result, Ruben Amorim’s side were the better team and there were plenty of positives to take out of the game.
But, like at many times during last season, it looked like a goalkeeping mistake cost United the game, with Arsenal’s goal coming from a corner which Altay Bayındır failed to deal with.
There were some complaints that the Turkish international was fouled, but many have simply stated that he needed to be stronger inside his own penalty area.
Micah Richards comes to the defence of “amazing” United star
Bayındır hasn’t got many chances between the sticks at Old Trafford but has struggled when opportunities have come around.
This wasn’t the first time he has been accused of being too weak for a corner against a North London opposition – a similar goal occurred against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup last term.
But when Alan Shearer suggested that United should be looking for a new goalkeeper before the transfer deadline, ex-Manchester City defender Micah Richards came to the defence of Bayındır.
The pundit believes that there has been too much criticism for the 26-year-old since the Arsenal defeat, and he believes that he’s much better than that mistake shows.
“Bayındır is not as bad as people have been making out over the weekend,” said Richards on The Rest of Football podcast.
“I agree that a strong number one would help them, especially if you got a top goalkeeper, but I just think that was a bad decision.
“I don’t think he’s that bad of a goalkeeper, I actually think he’s quite good to be honest.”
Amorim completely agrees about Bayındır
Richards is not the only one who defended Bayındır after his Arsenal mistake, with Amorim displaying one of his most passionate press conference moments when asked about the shot-stopper.
After the game, the United boss was asked whether he should have picked Tom Heaton over Bayındır. His face showed shock and anger. “Why?”
“Without VAR,” he continued when Bayındır’s mistake against Spurs was brought up. “With VAR, it is a foul and then what happened in the next game? At Arsenal: who saved the penalty? Who saved the game, all the game? No, no, no, before the penalty.
“You don’t remember the game? I remember the game. Altay was unbelievable in that game. I consider everything to put one or the other and I choose Altay.”
It was a clear defence from the United boss, but even with the additional comments from Richards, there aren’t many United fans who would be happy to see him starting more games this season.
