Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt has confirmed his transfer stance as Manchester United consider a move for him this summer.

The Reds are aiming to improve their defensive unit in the coming months following Raphael Varane’s departure.

Erik ten Hag’s side were plagued with injuries at centre-back last term, and INEOS want to ensure they have strong depth in the position going forward.

Jarrad Brantwaite appears to be the favourite option for the role but Everton are refusing to budge from their £70 million price tag.

According to David Ornstein, the Reds are also seriously considering a move to sign Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich.

It was explained that club-to-club negotiations are yet to take place, and there is no certainty the move will happen. However, he has emerged as a concrete target. The report added that the pursuit of De Ligt is independent to that of Branthwaite.

The Dutch international worked under Erik ten Hag at Ajax before moving to Juventus in 2019. Ornstein clarified that Ten Hag would welcome a reunion with the defender at Old Trafford.

Currently at Euro 2024 with the Netherlands, De Ligt has clarified that he will not consider his future until after the tournament, but left his options open.

“I’ve already said this is not the time for me to think about it. We’re playing at the Euros now, and that’s very important for me and the national team,” he told reporters.

“That’s why I can’t say now what I think about this situation. But what I can say is that I’ve now played my second season at Bayern – I’m very happy. For now, I’m focused on the Euros, and then we’ll see what happens”

The 24-year-old joined the Bundesliga side in the summer of 2022 but has fallen out of favour on various occasions in the two years since then.
