The latest surrounding why Matthijs de Ligt has still not signed for Manchester United despite a clear preference to play for Erik ten Hag.

While many expected that Matthijs de Ligt‘s move to Manchester United would accelerate following the Netherlands’ exit from the 2024 European Championships, news on the topic has seemingly gone quiet.

While it has been widely reported that the 24-year-old would like to leave Bayern Munich to reunite with Erik ten Hag, United and the Bundesliga outfit have yet to agree on a fee, despite many saying the eventual deal will land at around £42 million.

However, the latest from David Ornstein has implied that United are currently stalling on a deal for De Ligt due to the hope that they may be able to convince Lille’s Leny Yoro to sign for the Old Trafford club.

The latest from Ornstein claims that, although the club are negotiating for both players and have made progress on each signing, the current expectation is that only one of the centre-backs will join the club this summer.

While Yoro is the less-attainable asset, having a preference to join Real Madrid, it seems as if United are pushing harder at the moment to see if they can get the 18-year-old to join while having De Ligt as a perfectly reasonable fall-back option.

Reports from last month explained that United view Yoro as a unique transfer that they may as well attempt to sign, but that he was not part of the initially outlined summer transfer window plan.

Those in France have claimed that Yoro does not currently see a move to the Premier League as an appealing option at this moment in time, with his heart originally being set on the move to Los Blancos.

It was claimed by German transfer expert Christian Falk last week that United have officially started negotiations with Bayern for De Ligt and that an agreement could come as early as this week.

After confirming the signing of striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna for a reported £36 million, United will want to complete the rest of their transfer business as soon as possible.
