Matthijs de Ligt and Matheus Cunha have both agreed on one thing after Manchester United’s defeat to Brentford on the weekend.
Manchester United have managed just two wins from their first seven matches in all competitions this season, with those victories coming against Chelsea and Burnley.
Ruben Amorim’s team relied on an early red card in one game and a stoppage-time penalty in the other to scrape through.
Following a dismal campaign last year, United were desperate to begin this season with momentum, but they’ve fallen short of expectations.
Their most recent setback was a 3-1 defeat at Brentford, a result that has only intensified the growing pressure on Amorim.
De Ligt and Cunha completely agree amid United sack rumours
Reports surrounding Amorim’s future have re-emerged following the weekend’s defeat and there are several managers the club are considering if they decide to sack the Portuguese boss.
Even though the pressure seems to be building, United players seem to think that they have to take more responsibility for the poor form.
After defeat at Brentford, Matheus Cunha said: “I don’t think the problem is the manager. We need to have character to change the situation.”
His teammate Matthijs de Ligt agreed with this stance, telling the MEN: “It’s always easy to look to the manager, but in the end, the players on the pitch have to do it. We can’t say the goals we conceded, or the chances we conceded, are because of what… I don’t know, you guys always talk about the system.”
Amorim still has to change
Players are making mistakes at Old Trafford but there doesn’t seem to be enough change to try and limit those errors going forward.
There is plenty of talk about work on the training ground but we are not seeing the benefits. Changing the shape or personnel more often is being avoided.
United currently have their most talented batch of Academy talent in years but Amorim is opting to include two goalkeepers on the bench.
Amorim is not at fault for everything going wrong at United, but he will be the one to suffer if he doesn’t at least try and change things to improve.
