Matheus Cunha transfer verdict given as ex-Manchester United defender “very impressed” by Wolves star

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker Matheus Cunha this summer, and a former defender for the Reds has now urged the club to sign him.

A number of clubs are on high alert over Matheus Cunha due to the fact he is available for £62.5m this summer due to his release clause, and Manchester United are one of the clubs at the top of the queue.

Cunha showcased his brilliance against Ruben Amorim’s side earlier this season in the 2-0 defeat at the Molineux stadium, and he has already spoken about his desire to leave the relegation-battling club when the window opens this summer.

United will not be alone in their pursuit of the Brazilian, who has been of interest to the club since before he signed for Wolves, dating back to his period in Spain with Atletico Madrid.

The side from Old Trafford has now been urged to sign the player and trigger his release clause by a former United defender, who has pointed towards the fact the player could play with the current crop of strikers in the squad in regards to Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee as a key reason why the transfer could work.

United urged to sign Cunha

Manchester United have been urged to push for the signing of Matheus Cunha by former defender Mikael Silvestre, who believes his pedigree in the Premier League is a key reason why INEOS should target him over someone like Victor Gyokeres.

Speaking to 10bet, the former French international had the following to say.

“I think Cunha. I’d pay £60 million for him. I’d bring him in because he knows the Premier League, and he can play as a number nine or a ten, he’s versatile. You have Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund who can play with him. I like him a lot.”

Silvestre believes the attacker has the right type of mentality to succeed at a club like United and is the type of personality the team needs at this moment in time after an underwhelming campaign. He also believes being Premier League-proven is an attribute that’s hard to ignore.

“I’ve been very impressed with his progression, and again, it’s a little bit like Delap, doing what he’s done for Wolves. It’s a difficult team to shine in. He’s got a great character, a strong character; that’s what United needs in terms of attitude and spirit.”

“He’s also got pedigree in the Premier League. There are more certainties with a player like Cunha than there are with Gyokeres because he has that experience of the English game. Of course, Bruno joined from Sporting and has been a revelation since he signed, but you know exactly what you’re going to get from Cunha, and given the club’s finances are likely to be limited this summer, maybe it’s more sensible to move for him.”

Cunha expected to leave Wolves

Cunha recently confirmed his desire to leave Wolves in the summer, with a number of clubs already making checks on his situation as the window approaches. United are looking to strengthen the left and right number ten areas, and the former Atleti man is one of the best options available in that role on the market.

The form of Alejandro Garnacho and the injury to Amad have caused the attack to become stagnant, and the pressure the signing of someone like Cunha would take off the attackers in the United side cannot be understated.

In all competitions this season, the Brazilian has 15 goals, with only Bruno Fernandes in the United side able to boast anywhere near a record as impressive. Arsenal have also been another club heavily linked with the player for the last number of months, but there is a feeling Mikel Arteta would prefer to sign a true number nine, as opposed to a hybrid of sorts in the shape of Cunha.

For a team that struggles to maintain attacks and score goals, Ruben Amorim would welcome a signing at the level and quality of the Wolves man with open arms.
