Alejandro Garnacho could be likely to move away from Manchester United this summer, with ‘primary target’ Matheus Cunha potentially taking his place.
With the summer transfer window closing in on us, the time has come for Manchester United to start looking at what business they would like to make to try and bolster Ruben Amorim’s squad.
As it looks like it could be a very busy summer for Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s team, United have started their business early, with numerous transfer rumours starting to circulate already.
One of these rumours that has started to gain some traction is the potential acquisition of 25-year-old Wolves’ star Matheus Cunha.
Cunha has a reported £62.5million release clause in his contract, that many clubs have had their eye on recently. Amorim’s reds have identified the goalscorer as their ‘prime target‘, according to The Guardian.
Garnacho on the move?
If Cunha is to make the move up north, then it could potentially knock Alejandro Garnacho down in the pecking order, which could spell danger for his United career.
GiveMeSport state that the Red Devil’s would be ‘willing to sell Garnacho this summer’, and the 20-year-old is ‘increasingly likely to seek a summer departure’ should Cunha join.
Interest in the Argentine has been present for the vast majority of the season, with Garnacho being a keen talking point during the January transfer window due to links with Napoli and Chelsea.
Napoli offered a reported £50 million plus add-ons, however, this bid fell short of United’s asking price of £70 million. Since this offer, the Serie A title-challenger’s interest has not gone away, and they have been keeping tabs on the winger.
Napoli interest makes sense for Garnacho
If Napoli’s interest in Garnacho is to be as serious as reported, then this could be a perfect destination for the talented winger, as Napoli would still be looking to replace Georgian star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Garnacho could become the third former-United star to join this current Napoli side, with Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku both already donning the blue and white for Antonio Conte’s side.
Should the Argentine move, United would almost certainly need to bring in another forward player to provide competition in those positions behind the striker.
Even with the addition of Cunha, there aren’t many quality options in those areas and Garnacho is perhaps the only with the speed to run in behind.
Joshua Zirkzee, Mason Mount, Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo are all options in the position but none have the pace or directness of Garnacho, which would need to be found in another signing if he left.
