Matheus Cunha’s transfer to Manchester United is now finalised, with an agreement in place for his £62.5 million transfer to Old Trafford, according to Brazilian reports.
Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Matheus Cunha this summer, as they look to enhance Rúben Amorim’s attacking options.
This season, the team has struggled with goal-scoring consistency, relying heavily on captain Bruno Fernandes, especially after Amad’s injury kept him out for the past two months.
Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Højlund have combined for just 18 goals this season, and only five players have more than ten goal involvements, with Marcus Rashford, who is set to be sold this summer, among them.
In response, Amorim is targeting players who suit his 3-4-3 formation, with Cunha being an ideal candidate for the left attacking role.
Cunha to United transfer finalised
With significant reports linking Cunha to United having emerged earlier this month, it has now been claimed by that Brazilian journalist Raisa Simplicio that an agreement for the transfer has now been reached.
According to the report, it has been finalised that the 25-year-old Brazilian will sign for Amorim’s side this summer, and that United will pay the value of his release clause, which a host of English reports all state to be set at £62.5 million.
However, multiple reports have claimed that it is more likely United will pay this fee in instalments rather than upfront.
The Brazilian report explains that the negotiations for the player are “all tied up” and that the player should join United before the transfer window even opens on 1 June.
Why are United signing Cunha?
There are three main reasons why United are signing Cunha from Wolves for Amorim’s side this summer.
In recent seasons, United have not been signing players with previous Premier League experience, which has meant that they often have to spend time settling and adjusting to life in England. This causes United to have slow starts and increases pressure on players.
However, Cunha has plenty of Premier League experience having played for two and a half seasons with Wolves. Secondly, Cunha already operates as a left-sided attacking midfielder with Wolves and has shone in the position, meaning he will not have to adjust to the demands handed to him by Amorim.
Thirdly, he is a player with enough experience to make an immediate impact on the squad. Cunha is signing for United at a similar age to Bruno Fernandes, who raised the floor of all the players around him, and the hope is that the Brazilian can have a similar effect on the squad.
Signing an experienced player, but one who still has room to hit his peak, such as Cunha, alongside young talents like Liam Delap is a fantastic move from United and will hopefully raise the overall level in Amorim’s squad from next season onward.
