Matheus Cunha has provided a fresh injury update as Rúben Amorim’s squad continue their preparations for the Manchester derby after the international break, Sunday 14 September.
Matheus Cunha was Manchester United’s first senior signing of the summer, joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £62.5 million before pre-season began against Leeds United.
The Brazilian immediately impressed United fans and Rúben Amorim in pre-season, and he has continued his good form into the start of the Premier League season, despite playing out of position as a centre forward.
While he hasn’t yet scored for United, he has been one of the most impressive players for Amorim’s side, along with fellow new signing Bryan Mbeumo.
Cunha was again flying against Burnley, but was forced into an early withdrawal after picking up a hamstring injury in the first half. He appeared to signal that his leg was tight, rather than pulled.
Amorim will be hoping that his new signing is fit in time for the Manchester derby next weekend, and the attacking midfielder has now provided a fresh update on his injury status.
Cunha could return for City game
While Cunha has been playing as a striker this season, he is likely to drop back to attacking midfield against City if he is fit enough, with Mason Mount also struggling with fitness.
On Instagram, Cunha shared an image of himself on an exercise bike with the caption: “The time is flying”, suggesting he is working hard to return to full fitness as quickly as he can.
Later that day, the former Wolves player posted another image while at a UFC event, saying: “Thanks for the encouragement”.
While he doesn’t give a clear indication if he will return for the derby, Cunha has shown how hard he is working to ensure he is fit for the City clash. United fans will be praying he is back fit.

Šeško to make first start against City
Benjamin Šeško is yet to make a start in the Premier League since joining United, but he could change this against City, especially if Mount and Cunha are unavailable.
Šeško could lead from the front, with Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes playing in behind the Slovenian, meaning Kobbie Mainoo could also come back into the side.
Alternatively, Amad and Mbeumo may play behind Šeško, with Diogo Dalot switching to right-wing-back if he is fully fit. However, there are concerns over his fitness after he pulled out of the Portugal squad.
