Matheus Cunha appeared to drop a number of hints in Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Wolves yesterday that suggest a move to Old Trafford in the summer
Manchester United have lacked attacking quality and depth all season, with Rasmus Hojlund spurning a number of good opportunities at Old Trafford to get a goal in their 1-0 defeat to Wolves.
With a much-changed team after their Europa League quarter-final victory over Lyon after extra time, United dominated, with Alejandro Garnacho setting up players on a number of occasions, but spurned these chances with poor finishing, something Old Trafford has come to expect over the course of this season.
One player that was heavily linked with a move in the January transfer window is Matheus Cunha, the player who won the free-kick which Pablo Sarabia went on to score from.
The Brazilian was seen doing a number of actions that hinted at a potential move to United in the summer, the club the player reportedly favours, with fresh talks having been had over the weekend.
A number of hints dropped by Cunha
The Manchester Evening News touched on a few actions made by Cunha yesterday that point towards a potential summer transfer.
During the warm-ups for the game, Cunha could be seen rubbing the Old Trafford turf onto his legs. The 25-year-old was also seen waving at the home crowd inside the stadium.
At half-time, as the Brazilian was entering the tunnel, Rúben Amorim was seen putting his hand on the player’s back and greeting him.
Cunha has committed 90 fouls this season, accumulating 13 yellow cards in the process, earning him the reputation of being hot-headed. On Sunday, however, he was visibly avoiding getting into any conflicts with United players or with the fans.
Is Cunha a good fit at Old Trafford?
Despite spending the majority of this Premier League campaign battling relegation, Cunha has had a fantastic season, scoring 14 goals and assisting four in the league this season.
If Cunha were to switch the Black Country for Manchester, it’s seen by The Reds that the Brazilian would fit perfectly into one of the two number 10 roles behind the main striker.
As reported by multiple outlets, United are inching closer to an agreement for Cunha, with fresh talks having taken place in the last 48 hours. United would have to activate his £62.5 million release clause, but are hoping to have terms in place by next month while they still have headroom under Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Newcastle United are reportedly the main competition for Cunha’s signature, but the prospect of playing a pivotal role under Amorim is reported to have swayed the Brazilian.
