A fresh report from Italy has detailed the reasoning behind Juventus’s keen interest in signing Mason Greenwood from Manchester United this summer.

Mason Greenwood, 22, spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Getafe after Manchester United decided against reinstating him following his January 2022 arrest on suspicion of domestic abuse.

Although the Crown Prosecution Service eventually dropped the charges, United carried out a thorough internal investigation over several months. Despite initially considering his return, the club ultimately loaned Greenwood to Getafe due to fan pressure.

During his time at Getafe, Greenwood excelled, finishing the campaign as the club’s Player of the Season with 10 goals and six assists.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Greenwood is reportedly ‘edging closer’ to a permanent departure from United, with Juventus emerging as the frontrunner for his signature.

Juventus have just hired Thiago Motta as their new manager in Turin and are looking to make a strong impression in Serie A, having not won the competition since the 2019/20 season that was interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A report from Gazzetta dello Sport (via Tuttojuve) now claims that the club’s sporting director, Cristiano Giuntoli, is pushing to sign Greenwood this summer. He feels the attacker would be the perfect fit for the club’s 4-2-3-1 system under Motta.

While it is not made clear exactly which position he would be expected to play, Greenwood’s ability to play both as a striker and right winger makes him a candidate for both. Dušan Vlahović, the club’s No. 9, scored 18 goals last campaign and would be expected to continue in the position up front, leaving Greenwood to take the right-winger role.
