Mason Greenwood is said to be offered a loan move to Atalanta in order to secure Erik ten Hag his new number-one striker target.

Manchester United have two major decisions to make this summer – who they should sign as Erik ten Hag‘s new striker for next season, and what to do about Mason Greenwood‘s future.

Ten Hag originally wanted Harry Kane as his striker going into the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, however, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy rebuffed their efforts and explained that Kane was not for sale to any English club this summer.

It was then decided that instead of signing Kane, the club would move their attention to Atalanta striker Rasmus Højlund, who has become the club’s new first-choice target for the striker position this summer.

Mason Greenwood has been suspended by the club since January 2022 after videos surfaced online of him allegedly abusing and threatening to kill his partner.

Although the Crown Prosecution Service started to build a case against Greenwood, it was ultimately dropped due to a lack of key witnesses and evidence.

It has now been said by Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News that Mason Greenwood has been offered the chance to go to Atalanta on loan while United are negotiating with the Italian club for a transfer fee for Højlund.

John Murtough has ‘held extensive talks with Atalanta officials’ and has discussed the possibility of loaning Greenwood to the club in order to secure Højlund – and Atalanta are interested.

Atalanta are said to want around £50 million for the striker, and sending Greenwood on loan could smooth the negotiations between the two clubs and allow Atlanta to accept a lower fee.
