Maresca, Xavi, Southgate: Man Utd managerial state of play after Rúben Amorim sacking as one coach ‘pushing’ to join

After Manchester United sacked Rúben Amorim following a bombshell press conference following the side’s 1-1 draw against Leeds at Elland Road, several managers have been linked with the vacant job, with one seemingly pushing to make the move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United’s recent trip to Elland Road, where they drew 1-1 with Leeds, turned out to be Rúben Amorim’s last game in charge of the club.

After the full-time whistle blew, Amorim went on a tirade during his post-match press conference, venting his frustrations surrounding his lack of control at the club, stating that he wanted to “be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United.”

He also launched direct frustrations at the Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, as well as an indirect jab towards the Director of Scouting, Christopher Vivell, citing that both departments “needs to do their job”.

Despite INEOS’ public backing of the manager earlier on in the season, this turned out to be the final straw, and he was ultimately sacked on Monday morning.

The latest on potential permanent managers

It has been confirmed that former Manchester United midfielder and current Head Coach of the Under-18s side, Darren Fletcher, will be in the dug-out for Wednesday’s game against Burnley.

It is expected that he will be Manchester United’s interim manager until the summer, when a new permanent manager will be appointed.

Speaking on The United Stand, Ben Jacobs listed four new potential managers that the club are looking at. One name who has been linked to the job at Old Trafford is Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, who, after declining to extend his stay at the club past the summer, is reportedly very interested in the vacant job.

Recently sacked Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is also a name on the shortlist, with Jacobs reporting that Chelsea made their move for Maresca so quickly because they thought Man Utd would be interested in the Italian manager.

A third, and less likely to happen link is Sir Gareth Southgate, who former Manchester United Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth was reportedly very keen on bringing in. It’s unknown as to whether he would be interested in a return to club management after his lengthy spell managing the England national side.

The difference in links with Xavi

After enduring Manchester United’s worst start to a Premier League season with two wins from their opening seven games, Amorim’s position at the job started to look more and more unstable, and rumours of a potential move for Xavi to take the seat at Old Trafford began.

After a two and a half year stint in charge of his boyhood club, Xavi was sacked by Barcelona at the end of the 2023/24 campaign after a string of poor results.

Since then, despite being linked to a number of different clubs, the legendary midfielder has been out of a job since his dismissal.

Jacobs named the 45-year-old as a name that could be sounded out as Man Utd’s next manager, but what’s interesting is the fact that the interest is coming from his side, rather than the club, meaning that Xavi is very interested in the job and is actively pushing for the job.
