BBC Sport correspondent has shared the latest surrounding Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United future as he reveals the most likely timeline for his exit.

Marcus Rashford is set to leave Manchester United in 2025 after a candid interview revealed the 27-year-old’s intention to seek a new challenge.

A standout performer during his peak, Rashford delivered a career-best 30-goal season under Erik ten Hag in 2022/23. However, his form has faltered in recent campaigns, and under Rúben Amorim, he has found himself on the fringes of the squad.

Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes have cemented their places in United’s attacking lineup, leaving Rashford without a start in the club’s last seven matches, including their fixture against Southampton. This decline in playing time has only fueled speculation about his future.

Rashford’s story at United spans nearly two decades. His rise began with an unforgettable debut as an 18-year-old, scoring twice against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League and following it with a brace against Arsenal in his Premier League debut.

Manchester United are reportedly open to loaning Rashford in January, with a permanent transfer expected in the summer. His departure appears certain, marking the end of a remarkable chapter at Old Trafford as he prepares for a fresh start elsewhere.

Latest on Rashford’s future shared from Old Trafford

Ahead of United’s Premier League tie against Southampton, BBC Sport correspondent Simon Stone shared the latest, with the reporter speaking directly from Old Trafford.

Stone explained that it’s now likely that Rashford’s future will not be decided until deadline day for the winter window, which is on Monday, 3 Feburary.

“Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United future remains open to doubt,” he told BBC Sport on Thursday evening.

“The England forward has been linked with a number of clubs since his exile from United’s first team began in the middle of last month.

“The latest view is if Barcelona can find someone to sign Ansu Fati, they might be interested. Rumours have also surfaced about Borussia Dortmund interest.

“AC Milan have been mentioned but they are also keen on Kyle Walker and can only sign one under Italy’s registration rules.

“It feels very much like Rashford’s future will not be decided until deadline day.”

This Rashford transfer timeline is concerning

If Rashford’s transfer status is not confirmed on deadline day, this could be a major concern for United as it would give them almost no time to find a replacement.

Previous reports had linked Randal Kolo-Muani with a move to Old Trafford, but he has now joined Juventus on loan for the remainder of the season.

Rumours are also swirling around the future of Alejandro Garnacho, and should Napoli match United’s £60 million asking price, the club could be left with a very depleted front line.

The biggest issue surrounding Rashford is that his £300,000 a week wage is stopping a lot of clubs from launching loan or permanent bids, with loan suitors wanting United to contribute to a significant portion of those wages.
